About

Lisa Kennedy

I am a mother of three, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend and importantly to you, I am a midwife. I trained in the UK, in a city hospital which birthed 10,000 women a year. I worked in three large hospitals before I emigrated to New Zealand in 2015. Women in the UK have access to community midwives and hospital midwives. They can choose to give birth at home, at a  birth centre or in a hospital.

I went to work at Waikato hospital, the Bay of Plenty’s, nearest Tertiary care hospital. Then I worked for five years at Rotorua hospital. During my time there I studied for my Masters. I also became a midwifery first year of practice mentor, supporting newly qualified midwives. I spent three years on the board of Cleft New Zealand and rewrote the parents handbook. I am cleft affected as are my three children. Then I worked in Auckland as a charge midwife, on the labour ward at Middlemore hospital, the busiest and largest DHB in New Zealand.

Since becoming an independent midwife I have supported women on their pregnancy and motherhood journey. I provide care for homebirth, birth centre and hospital births. I take six women per month. You may see me driving around Papamoa, Te Puke and The Mount as I visit my mums and babies.

The Role of a midwife

New Zealand is unique in the model of midwifery care we provide. As a midwife, I care for you from early pregnancy, during your birth and up to 4-6 weeks postnatal. I can order your scans and blood tests and prescribe for pregnancy related issues. I will see you in the clinic every 4-6 weeks until 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks, then weekly after 36 weeks. During our time together, I monitor your pregnancy, I provide advice and education around pregnancy and parenting topics. I regularly post on my instagram and facebook tips & topics which help you to understand your journey.

Our clinic

I am based at 27 McLeod Place, Papamoa Beach. Sam Rhodes midwife also works from the same clinic room.
